What is a microniche, niche and market?

I think the first question that comes to mind here is how you define whether a market you think of is a market, niche or microniche.

If I thought of say Dog Training (I thought it good to use a banned one) then how can you tell where it lies in this?

There's no hard and fast rule on this, but I suppose the best answer is to decide whether you can break that down to something even more specific or make it less specific.

For example, in this case, the market could simply be dogs, the niche dog training and the microniche Bassett Hound training.

I was able to make it less specific to determine the market (people interested in anything related to dogs), then break it down further to find something really specific that fewer people will be looking for (your microniche).

I wouldn't stress over the exactness (is that even a word?) of doing this - the more you write down (as per the Action Task at the end of the video) the more you will see a pattern.

The idea is to get used to identifying markets and understanding how they can be broken down. Start doing your task and you will soon see which categories things start to drop into.

Good answer Lisa, I was sort of playing devil's advocate here because it comes up so often.

    You might get crossover too
Animals -> ... -> Animal Training -> Dog Training -> Circus Dog Training -> Circus Dog Training in America
Careers -> Training -> Animal Training -> Cat Training -> Australian Mist Cat Traiining
Pet Care -> Dogs -> Dog Training -> Dog Potty Training

I know I know - I am your typical ANALyst - Got to look deep into everything

I thinks it is important not to confuse Market, Niche & Micro-niche with keywords

    My understanding is this:
Market = people who share a common interest
Niche = a subset of people interested ina particular topic
Microniche = a subset of these people interested in a specific topic
Keywords = what they type to explore the topic

    Dog Training is a keyword...
    Market = Dog owners
Niche = Dog owner who want to train their dog
Micro-niche = Dog owners who want to train their dog to... be obedient, do tricks, use the toilet etc

The keywords they use depends on the 'purpose' of their inquiry... dog obedience, dog tricks, potty training etc

Excellent answer - I was just thinking similar myself when I looked at how people niche in the natural world.

The important points to think of I think - correct me if I'm wrong - is that the niche may have

    • a group of people in with a particular need
    • a language to describe it
    • a particular purpose to fulfil in marketing to them

    Patterns, Patterns everywhere....

Of course you can keep going either more general or more narrow ... and where you place your market label or micro niche label is arbitrary. The idea is you need to see that there is a hierarchy and it fans out the more you go in the micro direction. As we will be working more in the micro direction you need to get used to drilling down but equally being able come up a level or two and back down again as you think of ideas of areas to work in.

It is very easy to get stuck to high up or run out of ideas at the microlevel because you can't go back up levels.

So get flexing your niche detection muscles.

I'm probably getting a little ahead here but if I remember correctly from last years challenge, (and my notes) Guru Bob defines a Market, Niche, and Micro Niche's based on the number of competing pages (phrased matched) that exist for a specific keyword. For example if a phrased matched keyword has

    1. has [Jumping ahdea] then it is a Market to Mega Market Keyword

    2. has [Jumping Ahead] then it is a Niche Keyword

    3. has [Jumping ahead] then it is a Micro-Niche Keyword

I too get a little confused.

I thought I agreed with wrkfrmhm:

Market = people who share a common interest
Niche = a subset of people interested ina particular topic
Microniche = a subset of these people interested in a specific topic
Keywords = what they type to explore the topic

the first two examples in the video matched up with this: 'Bride's to be' and 'Computer Gamers' - however, the next market mentioned was health & fitness - which can clearly be broken down into more markets and niches.
ie: 'Health & Fitness' is not a group of people who share a common interest - people who like Yoga or people who like Karate would be markets coming under the 'Health & Fitness' mega-market banner I think.

So how do you define between a mega market and just a market, or does it not really matter much as the main point is to find 'micro-niches' at the end of the day?

Which do you think is correct out of these two examples:

    Market: Hair
    Niche: Dry Hair
    Micro-Niche: Dry Hair Conditioning Treatments

    or:
    Market: Beauty
    Niche: Hair
    Micro-Niche: Dry Hair

Well done and this should help with some challenge peeps who are confused.

I'm also beginning to realise that many niches can result in the same micro-niche, does this matter?

    eg:

Going to Prom: Prom Hair: Hair Pieces / Fascinator / Tiara
Bride to Be: Bridal Hair: Hair Pieces / Fascinator / Tiara
Wedding Guest: Guest Attire: Hair Pieces / Fascinator / Tiara?

So if you discover a great keyword for fascinators. How do you know if your traffic is coming from the prom niche or the wedding guest niche? or is it not an issue?
