Does that mean the niche I picked is a bit tougher than most? or is this normal.
This is my first site, but I guess I'm surprised with A) how quickly I was able to get to PR3, and B) after finding that out, taht I'm still barely on the 2nd page.

You always have to remember that according to Google there are something like 200 ranking factors and the "SEO experts" have only been able to identify about 150 of them. So it's kind of useless to look at any one ranking factor in isolation. My best recommendation would be to use the competition module in Market Samurai to look at the top site for your keywords and then compare all the ranking factors shown in Market Samurai to yours. The factors shown in Market Samurai are known to carry the most weight (and are available from Google).
Jealous! You must be doing something right...would love to take a look at your site if you want to send me a link. I have PR0 and am struggling to show up at all in search results so currently trying to work out where I might have gone wrong, have been changing the structure of WP blog and such like.
