Module One Starter Questions
Hey everyone, I am in Module One, Day Four and I had a few questions that maybe some of you could help answer.
1 - Why are we using the Broad Match type in Market Samurai when doing our keyword research? I know Jon mentions that we are looking for the long-term potential of a keyword, but...I thought the Broad Match type does not give an accurate impression of what the search volume for a particular keyword is since it can include the words in any order (along with other words as well)? If someone can clarify that would be great.
2 - One of the filters Jon tells us to keep on is the SEOT Filter. He says that this tells us the number of searches per day. But when you hover over it, the definition is: "Maximum potential daily clicks that a #1 ranked site for this keyword term could potentially receive." That, to me, does not sound like the same thing as number of searches per day. There is another filter "Total Searches" that is defined as: "Average number of people who search for this keyword daily." That sounds like the one we should be using. So why are we using the SEOT Filter and not Total Searches? Again if someone can clarify?
3 - Do we have to choose a Theme Keyword and Category Keywords for this process? Is it possible for us just to choose one keyword to start with and go forward with that? I am still very new to all this and I hear a lot of people saying that it is easier to try and rank for one keyword first than for several keywords all at once. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Ryan

Why are we using the Broad Match type in Market Samurai when doing our keyword research?
Because almost all "real world" searches on Google are done broad, it is, in fact, the most accurate search volume. Just because your site is going to be phrase match optimized, doesn't mean you're not also in the race for broad match traffic. Also, your PBR filter keeps this relevant for you. If the broad match is a huge runaway from the phrase match, the PBR will be low.
2) - You're right, he uses the wrong terminology. He was previously talking about searches and he unconsciously carried over the term. What SEOT tells us is the expected number of visitors to our site if we ranked number one. So in that section, substitute "visitors" for "searches" and you'll have it right. We judge by expected traffic, not by total searches.
I hear a lot of people saying that it is easier to try and rank for one keyword first than for several keywords all at once.
That is exactly backwards. Ranking for "best size eight sport socks" is about twenty five times easier than ranking for "sport." Just look at the numbers.
I am still very new to all this
We all started as newbies! Welcome aboard!
Just starting The Challenge is a big step for a lot of people so be proud of that first step and never feel bad about what you don't know. It's your willingness to learn that matters.
One thing I would advise to make this whole process go a lot easier... take it on faith that The Challenge process works and just follow it every step of the way. If nothing else, once you get through, you'll have the knowledge and experience to be able to decide whose advice is solid and who is blowing smoke.
The Challenge was created by some of the top millionaire marketers on the net and it really is designed to guide you step by step in a way that gives you the best possible chance for success.
I'm not saying you shouldn't post your questions, you should. I would definitely encourage you to think and question and try to get every ounce of meaning from every lesson, but don't ever let your questions stop you from moving forward with The Challenge exactly as it is presented. Always keep moving forward.

Thanks Dean. I appreciate your response.
Do you have any advice for more quickly arriving at your Theme and Category Keywords? I find that after selecting a keyword to drill down your main keyword from, the new group of keywords you arrive at may not be related enough to form a site around.
Secondly, any reason Market Samurai is so slow? Is it just the trial version that is like this? Seems to take a long time to arrive at results...
