This was not my original idea, it was kdpnz suggestion found here. However, instead of putting more work on The Challenge team I thought it could be handled as a community effort. As more tools and software appear around the forum we can easily add to the list to help anyone unfamiliar with them find out what they are.
The idea is to list the majority of “Marketing” terms, including abbreviations, software and tools and a brief definition of what they are. I’ll get the list started:
The Challenge Community's Running List of Marketing Terms
- @WORD – Typically implies a Twitter username. See also: Twitter
- 30DC - Thirty Day Challenge, the former name of The Challenge.
- Anchor – A word, phrase or graphic image, in hypertext, it is the object that is highlighted, underlined or "clickable" which links to another site; commonly referred to as a link.
- Backlinks – incoming links to one webpage, from another
- Black-hat SEO – Techniques that are considered immoral, illegal or generally foul marketing techniques, such as deception and spam. See also: SEO
- Blog - An online dated diary listing your periodic thoughts on a specific topic, often in reverse chronological order
- Blogging – the act of posting on blogs
- Broad match – A from of keyword matching, most common for queries, referring the matching of a SERP to selected keywords in random order See also: SERP
- Chrome – A web browser created by Google.*
- Chrome Extension – An additional feature that can be added to Chrome
- Chromed Bird – Chrome extension for Twitter integration*
- Directory – A website, dedicated to listing and categorizing websites. Variants include sites such as blogs, RSS and local directories. See Aslo: DMOZ, Yahoo Directory
- DM - Direct Message
- DMOZ – The Open Directory Project is the largest, human edited directory of websites. DMOZ is owned by AOL, and is primarily run by volunteer editors. See also: Directory
- Dropbox – File sharing application recommended for groups*
- Email marketing - the promotion of products or services via email.
- Facebook – Popular social media website.
- Feed Readers – A news aggregator that display content from syndicated web content from web feed See Also: News Aggregator
- Firefox – Popular web browser used in previous challenges.
- Firefox Add-on – Similar to chrome extensions, adds features to Firefox.
- Google Alerts – A service allowing the tracking of updates of a Google search. Has an RSS feed.
- Google Docs – Online document sharing tool*
- Google Global – Chrome extension for SEO*
- Google Groups – Group organization tool recommended for groups*
- Google Maps – Global maps recommended to pin locations for meetings*
- Google Reader – A popular web news aggregator, useful for RSS Feeds.
- Google Trends – A service, of which Dan Raine is a master, allowing users to see seasonal trends about a keyword.
- Hashtag – Tagging an individual tweet by using a hash (#) in front of the tag. They allow the community to easily stream a particular subject.
- Hootsuite - Web based twitter client
- IM - See Internet Marketing
- Internet Explorer – A web browser crated by Microsoft
- Internet Marketing - According to GuruBob: The act of making people aware of and eager to obtain a product or service.
- iTunes – A music application that can be used to subscribe to TC training videos*
- Keyword - The words or phrases that people use to search online.
- Kuber PageRank Checker – Chrome extension used to check PageRank. See Also: PageRank*
- Link bait – Any piece of content (usually an article, but it can be any media including software), that encourages other webmasters to link to your site.
- Link Building – The process of getting quality websites to link to your website, in order to improve search engine rankings
- Magnificent Symphony - A term used by Ed to refer to the process: market research, traffic, conversion, product.
- Market - A community of people who share a common interest in a particular subject or activity, often with their own language built from terms and acronyms.
- Market Samurai – Internet Marketing “Swiss Army Knife” *
- Mention - When another tweet includes your @username. See also: Twitter
- Microblog – A blog that is typically much smaller than the average blog
- Micro-niche - Niches within niches.
- MS – See Market Samurai
- News Aggregator – A program used to compile multiple sources of information, commonly using web feeds, See also: Feed Reader
- Niche - Effectively a subset of a market that relates to a specific topic.
- OCI – Commercial intent. See also: Market Samurai
- OP - Original Poster, A term commonly used on forums directing a comment at the user who started the thread
- PageRank – A value, 0 – 10, assigned to your website by Google. See also: Search Engine Rank
- Page Score – A value, 0 – 5, assigned to your website by Bing. See also: Search Engine Rank
- Pay-per-Click – An advertising pricing model in which advertisers pay agencies based on how many consumers clicked on a promotion. Commonly abbreviated 'PPC'
- Pay-per-Impression – An advertising pricing model in which advertisers pay agencies based on how many consumers see their promotions.
- Pay-per-Sale – An advertising pricing model in which advertisers pay agencies based on how many consumers actually buy something as a direct result of the promotion.
- PBR – Phrase vs Broad search ratio. See also: Market Samurai
- Phrase match – A form of keyword matching, normally involving quotes around a query, in which a SERP is an exact match to that of the keywords. See also: SERP
- PPC – See Pay-per-Click
- Retweet – A repeated tweet. Commonly abbreviated RT
- RSS – Really Simple Syndication, see RSS Feed
- RSS Subscription Extension – Chrome extension for RSS discovery. *
- RSS Feed – A web feed used by programs to collect changes from a website.
- RT – See retweet
- Search Engine – A website that indexes the internet, much like an index of a book. Users can use the search engine to find relevant information for keywords. The Challenge focuses mainly on the search engine Google.
- Search Engine Rank – A rank given to your website by a search engine reflecting your importance on the web. Larger numbers commonly reflect a better website. See PageRank, Page Score, Web Rank
- Seesmic - A multi-platform Twitter tool
- SEO – Search Engine Optimization
- SEO Matrix – Color coded analysis of top 10 competing pages. See also: Market Samurai
- SEO Quake – Chrome Extension for SEO*
- SEOC – Number of competing pages. See also: Market Samurai
- SEOT – Estimated traffic for #1 ranked page. See also: Market Samurai
- SERP - Search Engine Results Page.
- Skype – Internet video chat program.*
- SMO – Social Media Optimization
- Social Media – A category of sites that is based on user participation and user-generated content.
- Socialoomph – Web based twitter management offering scheduling of tweets
- TC10 – The Challenge 2010 (Official hash tag: #TC10) See also: Hash tag
- TDC – Less prevalent form of Thirty Day Challenge. See also: 30DC
- Thread - A forum term referring to the responses to an original post.
- Tweeple – Sometimes used to refer to twitter users
- Tweet – A Twitter post
- Twittelator Pro – An iPhone app for advanced Twitter usage, as mentioned by Ed.
- Twitter – A social media website designed to send short messages.*
- Ultimate Chrome Flag – Chrome extension used for SEO*
