Hello @Bandoolero, I'm at the your position right now.

What I'm done, first I registered at Elance.com & oDesk.com. And completed their's inside test yesterday. After you'll done this, they'll increase your quota to bid on to the projects.

My strategy right now, is to reading as much as I possible can of offers, and try to contact with the employer via skype or phone for example. And try to negotiate made work for him, may be for free, just for receive first time feeling how to negotiate with my future employers. And I'm very hope, that earned money and skills will help me to invest them into my (own) future projects and have a skills to hire another outsources.

    Bandoolero,

Yes. Just go about it as Vitaly Makarkin has written. After registering, of course, t is important to complete Elance's Inside Test.
That is the best way to approach Elance and similar sites. Good Luck to you.

It really is a case of starting at the beginning. Just as Vitaly has. So you will be starting down the bottom of the feeding chain, where every new entrant on Elance must start and work your way up. As far as pricing, well have a look at what others are pricing for similar jobs, and recognizing you are brand new, and want to get experience, I would suggest you price yourself competitively.

As at this stage you want to attract clients, and the best ones to attract will be those that are more price driven. As opposed to experience driven. So you get the experience that way, NEVER trading on quality. You then start to get good feedback from those clients (because you have high standards of delivery) and then as you build up your experience, you can then start to increase your prices.

So think about it strategically - you want to get clients, so really with very little experience, the best way to do so it via price.

It's the same sort of thing as when you come out of Uni (College) and you have this wizzy degree and high expectations, and you go for a job, and you get told: 'well you don't have any experience' and you think 'well how can I get experience if you don't give me the chance?!', and you recognize you have to take a job at the bottom of the rung and work your way up.

Right now you have your diploma in IM, which is great, that is more than a lot of your client's will have. And you just need to get that experience, as I suggest you can above

    Best

I've also worked with Elance and oDesk. The both have similar systems while they also have differences. It's actually true that landing your first freelance job at both outsourcing sites is very difficult. That is because of too many competitors. So the question was 'How can I compete?' and the answer would be to have a good feedback and ratings, just like other service providers. How do you get a good feedback and good ratings? It's simple, bid low on a project or have a low rate on yourself for projects. So when you bid low on projects, there's a great chance that the contractor will hire you. Then just be sure to do the job well so the contractor will give you a good feedback and rating. That's it. When you get a good feedback, you can then raise your bids and rates.

As for the contractor's side, to avoid getting bad service providers, it's always better to check their profile and their work experience - their ratings and their feedback. Portfolio's might help too. And when you hire service providers, people from Philippines and India can be a great option since they are cheaper but can still provide good work.
