Articles for Backlinks vs Articles for Website

Hey guys what sort of ratio should I be using for creating articles for getting Backlinks as apposed to writing content for my site.

Should I be doing one for one. I.E. write one article for my site and then write one to be submitted to an article directory.

or do I need to be more concerned about creating more content for my site?

or do I need to be more concerned with getting high quality backlinks?

For the Challenge, what we've been told is:

One ezinearticles article on your theme keyword
One Squidoo lens on your theme keyword
One main blog article on theme keyword, then weekly articles on category and theme keywords
Short posts 2-3 times a week on Posterous which go out to your mini posting network.

So we're not creating or posting articles on article directories at this point. I think the idea is that what we're done is enough to test, and there's no point putting extra work into an article marketing campaign until we know the niche is a good one.
