    A 'signing into Hostgator' question...

Hi all, earlier this week I opened an account at Hostgator and so I now have a username and a password for Hostgator...thats fine, no problem there...
I have also signed up for a Wordpressdirect account and so I now also have a user name and a password there as well ...thats fine, no problem there either...
The question is this: Should I still be able to sign into my Hostgater account (to see what's going on with payments and domain names etc) or do Wordpressdirect take control of my Hostgator account?
If it is possilbe for me to sign into my Hostgator account then how do I go about doing it, I cannot find a Hostgator page that say's 'login' or anything like that? any comments would be most appreciated,
    regards Jim T.

Hi Jim, No wpd don't take control, in the wpd set up you just give that tool permissions to add/manage content on the domain.

When you set up your hostgator account you should have recieved an email with billing logon details (this if it's the same for everyone - https://secure.hostgator.com/billing/). As for managing your site content, you log directly into the domain with www.yourdomain.com/cpanel or www.yourdomain.com/whm (depending on the type of account I believe). But be wary of making any changes as it might interfere with any changes you make via wpd.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Jim T,

You should have received a Welcome email from Hostgator with the log in information for your account. Page 6 of the transcript for Module 2, Day 5 called "Set Up Your Wordpress Blog" shows a screenshot of the Hostgator information you should have received via email and will need for your blog installation via WPD.

Marty explains this in detail in Module 2, Day 5, so I suggest you go through that video again if you haven't already done so. You will be entering the Hostgator information into Wordpress Direct when you are setting up your blog.

However, you should also keep the Hostgator log in information in a safe place for future reference. It will be used with any other domains you add to your Hostgator account in the future.

    Cheers,

    Linda

    Hey Jim -

I've had my HostGator account for a couple of years, so the info may have changed, but here's what I've got:

I go into my HostGator account fairly often, as I set up new websites on a semi-regular basis. I also log in there to set up e-mail forwarders.

To log in: Check your first e-mail from HostGator; it should have a url like:

    http://gator###.hostgator.com/cpanel <== "###" being a distinct numeral.

Once you put in your main HostGator user/password, you should have access to your cPanel.

Additionally, once you're in, look in the left hand column near the bottom of the page & notice that your nameservers are listed there. It's a good idea to write those down somewhere.

    Email Forwarders:
I like to set up custom e-mail forwarders for each of my sites, so if I do get spam harvested, I will know where it's coming from & can deactivate the forwarder.

In cPanel, in the 'Mail' area, click on 'Forwarders'. Click on 'add forwarder', enter the name you want to forward (e.g.- socialmedia@domainname.com), enter the destination you want to receive the mail at: (e.g.- socialmediaformysite@gmail.com) and click <add forwarder>.

    Hope that helps,

    -A.

    Hi,

    Thanks for sharing that, Andrew!

I checked on the Hostgator Home page, under Support, and found this FAQ: "Where do I go to login to my control panel?"

    http://support.hostgator.com/article...-control-panel

Also, their phone and live chat support are excellent in case you ever have questions for them even after the Challenge is over.

    Cheers,

    Linda
